Since LED strip lights hit the UK market a number of years ago, they have taken the industry by storm and have sparked the discussion of whether it is worth swapping to LEDs. Whether it is in your home, business or even van, LED strip lighting is bang-on-trend and not just for its timeless aesthetic.

The question is not ‘Should I get LED lights?’ but ‘How to choose the right LED strip lights?’ If you want to know more about switching to this modern style of lighting, you may have questions you want answered first – this is where ArcLED comes in.  Our team of experts has put together this FAQ guide to selecting the right LED strip lights for you.

If you have been weighing up swapping your traditional bulbs for LED lights, let us help you complete your pros and cons list. In case you do need a few more items for your pros list, there are some easy wins:

  • Energy Efficient – LED strip lights are energy-efficient which means you can get the same light level for less energy output when compared with a traditional bulb.
  • Cost Effective – Their energy efficiency gives us another pro for our list; lighting your space will cost significantly less.
  • Longevity – LED bulbs are also designed to last a long time meaning you will save money by not needing to replace them so frequently.
  • Low Maintenance – LED bulbs are also easy to maintain and easy to keep clean as they are usually flush against your surface.

So you’ve decided that LED lights are right for you and now you are asking ‘How do I choose the right LED light?’ Here’s a list of factors to consider:

  • Colour
  • Lumens
  • Power/Wattage
  • Ease of Installation

How do I choose a LED light colour?

Choosing the right LED colour is very important. Consider the purpose of the space and the ambience you want to create. This will help determine the LED light colour you choose. While it may seem easier to choose a colour changing LED strip light ask yourself if it is practical or necessary. Colour changing LED strips are sure to wow everyone who gets a glimpse and for many spaces they are the best choice, but if they are going in an office or commercial kitchen, it probably won’t be suitable. You want to select a colour that will highlight your interiors and provide you with the lighting best for the selected area.

How do I choose LED lumens?

If you have decided that a white LED strip is best for your space, you will need to decide on the tone of white that you would like. To choose the appropriate LED lumens think about the purpose of the space. For working areas such as offices and kitchens, choose a natural white. This bright tone is also great for bathrooms, however, you may want a dimmable option for relaxing in the bath. For spaces designed for relaxing such as living rooms, dining areas, restaurants, and hotels choose a warm white for cosy inviting yellow tones. Take into consideration the size of your space when choosing LED lumens; bigger spaces may benefit from natural white, however, this bright white tone may be too overpowering in smaller rooms.

What is the best wattage for LED strip lights?

The best wattage for your LED strip lights will depend on the product you choose. When you are selecting your driver make sure the wattage of the power supply is 10% higher than the total wattage of the LED strips. You don’t want to maximise the driver or overload it because your lights will simply not work.

Which is better, 12v or 24v LED strip?

The voltage of your LED strip can be determined by the length that you need to use. It is better to use 12v LED strips for smaller projects as they do not need as much power. However, to get even light throughout your LED strip for longer strips, you will need a 24v product.

Where should LED strip lights be placed?

There are many different types of LED tape designed for different types of conditions. Are your LED strip lights being placed outside, in your living room or garden? All IP20 strips can only be used indoors where there is absolutely no chance of water ingress. If you are looking for something to light your decking or around the pool, be sure to use LED tape with an IP67 rating or higher.

Do I need an electrician to install LED lights?

You should hire an electrician to install your LED lights. You need to ensure your LED lights are installed safely and to the correct standards. Some types of LEDs require extra steps to be installed such as adding drivers, power supplies and controllers. Not only is it best for your safety to get a professional to install your LED lights, but it also ensures your warranty is valid.

What profile should I use for LED Tape?

Surface Mount Profile – This style of housing is perfect for installations where the strip is in a visible place, but you want a more ‘finished’ look. It can be simply surface mounted to the ceiling or walls using countersink screws directly through the extrusion, alternatively, mounting clips can be supplied.

Recessed Profile – You may want to consider a recessed aluminium profile if you want the lighting to finish flush with the wall or ceiling. A recessed profile can create an attractive light-bar effect that diffuses the LEDs into a single run of light with a smooth glow.

Plaster-in Profile – If you want to house your new LED strips, but hide the housing completely, this is the perfect option for you. Used typically in corner mount lighting designs, plaster-in profile is neatly hidden whilst providing protection for your lighting. It must be installed before you finish plastering a room, so make sure measurements and your design are final before opting for this style of aluminium extrusion.

There are many more types of LED aluminium profiles, however, the three listed above are the most common for domestic installations. They will also complement restaurants, clubs and bars. If you have something a little more specialist in mind such as a suspended or rounded profile, we have just the range for you. Our architectural profiles have got you covered, and you can browse the whole selection right here.

With the knowledge to get started on your next interior design project, you will soon want to add LED strip lights to all your spaces. This versatile type of LED lighting can be used in rooms, cabinets, countertops, shop displays, stairways, doorways and more.

Now you’ve got a few tips on selecting the right LED strip lights, you might want to think about an aluminium profile to house them. Using an aluminium LED profile when installing strip lights gives a much more professional finish and also helps to protect your new lighting. It’s perfect for use where the lighting is in a visible place and you don’t want to show off an unhoused PCB (Printed Circuit Board). We list a huge range of 2 metre profiles to suit all installations such as 45 degree profiles, recessed and even suspended. Check out the collection here.
