What do I need for an LED strip lighting project?

At ArcLED, we know that planning your LED lighting setup can feel a little overwhelming at first.  With so many options available, how do you know which components you really need?

Whether you are adding ambient kitchen lighting, upgrading your home office, or designing outdoor feature lighting, knowing exactly what you need is essential to getting it right, first time.

At ArcLED, we supply everything you need to complete a full LED strip lighting setup – from high-performance LED tape to compatible drivers and controls.  Here is a simple guid to help you understand what to buy for your project.

LED strip lights – Pick the right one for your space

The LED strip (or LED tape) is the core of your lighting setup.  Strips come in a variety of styles, brightness levels, and functions, so choosing the right one depends on where and how you plan to use them.

Key differences to look out for

  • Voltage – 12v or 24v

24V LED strips are ideal for the longer runs due to lower voltage drop, while 12v is perfect for smaller installations in campervans or tight spaces

  • IP rating – indoor or outdoor use

For general indoor use, IP20 LED strips will do the job.  In Bathrooms and kitchen areas, or other high-moisture areas, go for IP65.  For external or wet rooms (shower), you will need to go for IP67 rated strips which we can seal in house for you to keep them protected.

Colour options – Match the Mood to Your Space

  • Single colour: Clean and simple white or warm white light
  • CCT Adjustable: Lets you toggle between warm white and cool white tones
  • RGBW: A flexible option combining colour with true white tones.
  • RGB+CCT: The full spectrum of light, with every colour and every white tone available

LED Profiles – Aluminium Channels for LED Tape

Aluminium LED profiles (also known as LED channels) are essential for both function and finish.

They;

  • Diffuse LED light, reducing spotting and creating a more even glow
  • Protect you LED strips, from dust, debris, and human contact
  • Allow for heat dissipation, extending the life of your strips and will allow them to be covered under

We offer surface mounted, recessed, and corner profiles to suit any application – whether its under cabinet lighting, shelf illumination, or architectural features.

Plaster-in and Tile-in Profiles

For a seamless, high-end finish, plaster-in LED profiles (also called trimless profiles) allow you to embed your lighting into plasterboard walls or ceilings, creating a clean, built-in look.
Tile-in profiles are specially designed for use with tiled surfaces – ideal for bathroom or kitchen installations where you want discreet linear lighting integrated into tiled walls or floors.

These options are perfect for modern, minimalist interiors where you want the lighting to become part of the architecture.

LED Drivers – Powering your LED Strips

An LED driver (or transformer) converts mains electricity into the low voltage your LED strip need, usually 12v or 24v.  Choosing the right LED driver is critical to the safety and performance of your system.  To get this you need to;

  • Match the driver voltage to your strip (e.g. 24v strip = 24v driver)
  • Calculate total wattage by multiplying the watts per metre by the number of metres you are installing
  • Add a safety margin: Choose a driver with at least 10-20% more power capacity than your strip requires.  If you have 100w of strip, do not choose a 100w driver.  Instead, go up to a 150w driver so that you are not pushing the driver to its maximum output.  This will shorten the lifespan.

LED Controllers and Dimmers – Smarter, More Flexible Lighting

Once you’ve got your LED strip powered, it’s time to choose how you want to control it. This depends on the type of LED strip you’re using.

  • Single colour LED strip dimmer: Use a simple wall dimmer or wireless remote to control brightness
  • CCT Controllers: Adjust between warm and cool white with a dedicated remote or wall panel.
  • RGBW / RGB+CCT: Control colours, brightness, and scenes with remotes, wall units, or smart apps.
  • Smart LED Controllers: Integrate with Alexa, Google Home, or smartphone apps for full automation and voice control. Simply use one of our smart receivers to achieve this.

How to Plan Your LED Lighting Project
